Patai, Raphael

Patai, Raphael
(b. 1910)
   American anthropologist and biblical scholar, son of Joseph Patai. He was born in Budapest, and in 1933 moved to Palestine, where he became an instructor in Hebrew at the Hebrew University. In 1944 he founded the Palestine Institute of Folklore and Ethnology in Jerusalem and served as its director of research. In 1947 he settled in the US, where he taught anthropology at Dropsie College and later at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He published studies dealing with the culture of the ancient Hebrews and the modern Middle East.
